About Us
Located in Garland County, this 135-acre Arkansas Game and Fish Commission operation comprises several ponds of varying sizes located near the south shore of Lake Hamilton. In winter, the ponds attract ducks such as Northern Shoveler, American Wigeon, Ring-necked Duck, and Bufflehead. During migration, drained, muddy ponds attract shorebirds. They are most common in April and May and from late July through September. While some observation can be done from the car along the main road through the hatchery, the best views are gained by walking on the levees between the 95 acres of ponds. Driving on the levees is not allowed. Rarities seen here include Long-tailed Duck, Black and Surf Scoter, Glossy Ibis, Red-necked Phalaropes, and Yellow-headed Blackbird. It was here that Arkansas’ first, and thus far only, Mountain Bluebird was seen.
