About Us

Baxter's Vineyards, nestled in the historic town of Nauvoo, Illinois, proudly holds the title of the oldest winery in the state. Our roots stretch back to 1857 when our founders, Emile and Annette Baxter, established this family-run winery. Today, we carry on the family tradition with Kelly and Brenda Logan at the helm, representing the fifth generation of the Baxter family dedicated to grape and apple cultivation, as well as wine production.

Our history is rich and intertwines with the historical fabric of Nauvoo itself. Emile Baxter, initially part of the Icarian commune, decided to return to Nauvoo from the East Coast, drawn back by the allure of rural life. Embracing the knowledge of grape culture from his Icarian friends, Emile planted grape cuttings on eight acres of land, which marked the beginning of our legacy. Over the years, the Baxter family expanded their enterprise, with Emile's sons joining the business, leading to the establishment of E. Baxter and Sons, proprietors of the Golden Hills Vineyards.

The history of viticulture in Illinois traces back over 150 years, with Nauvoo serving as a pivotal area for grape production. In the late 19th century, Nauvoo boasted over 600 acres of grapes and 40 wine cellars, gaining fame for its superior wines. Among these was Illinois's oldest recorded Concord grape vineyard, established in 1851, which continues to produce fruit to this day in the Nauvoo State Park. Baxter's Vineyards now cultivates 16 acres, harvesting 13 different varieties each year.

Our winery produces approximately 1000 cases annually, offering a diverse selection from sweet to dry wines that cater to a variety of palates. Whether you prefer red, white, or blush, we have something for everyone. Our wine-tasting and gift shop are open Monday through Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm, and on Sundays from 10 am to 5 pm, with adjusted hours from January to March. Visit us to explore our rich history and find the perfect bottle for you.

Located in Nauvoo's scenic setting, The Wine Barrel, situated across the patio from the Tasting Room, offers a cozy neighborhood bar vibe. We're open from Monday to Sunday with varying hours, and additional hours are available by appointment.
